Daily Light – Sept 29, 2017

Your daily goal:

Philippians 3:14  “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

(Monday-Friday, from my morning quiet time, I will write a short thought for that day which I pray God will use to motivate you to ‘GO’ for that day.  Your objective is simple…to GO…to GO OUT and share the love of Christ with someone in that day….to GO and bear fruit …to be light to the world.)

Today’s Daily Light:

Continuing:  In order to have a better view and understanding of the accurate doctrine of our Christian faith…let’s work through the fundamental ‘catechisms’

(We will provide one, or a couple of Catechisms each day for approximately 2 weeks.   The ‘comments’ are from John Piper.  Take time in your own study to review the scripture verses that are provided within each question ‘so that’ you can establish your understanding based on the truth of the word of God.)

QUESTION 24: DID GOD LEAVE ALL MANKIND TO PERISH IN THE CONDITION OF SIN AND MISERY?

Answer: God, out of his mere good pleasure, from all eternity, having chosen a people to everlasting life, did enter into a covenant of grace, to deliver them out of the condition of sin and misery, and to bring them into a condition of salvation, by a Redeemer.

Scripture: Ephesians 1:3-4; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; Romans 5:21; 8:29-30; 9:11-12; 11:5-7; Acts 13:48; Jeremiah 31:33.

Comment: The term “covenant of grace” is filled with sweet and precious hope. It refers to the free decision, commitment and oath of God to employ all his omnipotence and wisdom and love to rescue and glorify his people from sin and misery. It is wholly initiated and carried through by God. It cannot fail.

It is valid for all who believe. Whosoever will may come and enjoy this grace! And, since this “believing” and this “willing” is a work of God’s sovereign grace, those who believe and come are the elect, “chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world” (Eph. 1:4). Thus the covenant was sealed in the heart of God before the world was.14

This “covenant of grace” is the cry of victory over all the battle strife in missions. The grace of God will triumph! He is covenant-bound, oath-bound to save all those who are foreordained to eternal life (Acts 13:48)! “Jesus died for the nation (of Jews), and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad” (John 11:52).

The battle cry of missions is, “The Lord has other sheep that are not of this fold: He must (covenant-bound!!) bring them also. They will (sovereign grace!!) heed his voice!” John 10:16.

QUESTION 25: WHO IS THE REDEEMER OF GOD’S ELECT?

Answer: The only Redeemer of God’s elect is the Lord Jesus Christ, who, being the eternal Son of God, became man, and so was and continues to be God and man, in two distinct natures and one person, forever.

Scripture: Galatians 3:13; 1 Timothy 2:5; 3:16; John 1:14; Romans 9:5; Colossians 2:9.

QUESTION 26: HOW DID CHRIST, BEING THE SON OF GOD, BECOME MAN?

Answer: Christ, the Son of God became man by taking to himself a true body and a reasonable soul. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and was born of her, yet without sin.

Scripture: Hebrews 2:14; 4:14; 7:26; Matthew 26:38; Luke 2:52; John 1:14; 12:27; Luke 1:31, 35; 2:52; Colossians 2:9.

Comment: I am typing this on a Personal Computer. I have virtually no idea how it works. That it works I am certain: I have typed hundreds of sermons on it. So it is with the “incarnation”–the “how” is (as the old theologians used to say) “ineffable”. We believe it because the Scriptures teach it and because it “works” to make

sense out of God’s whole redemptive plan.

Father…Your plan is perfect!  I know that there is none among men who can fully comprehend why You reason what you reason or fully understand why You do what you do…I get that, totally, and I submit to your sovereignty.   I trust you for my eternal life.   You alone I trust.   I thank you that you included me/us in your plan.  I thank you that you have the ability to love and out of that love you gave us your ‘Son’, Jesus, to be our way …to be our redeemer…our savior…thank you Father…thank you Jesus.

QUESTION 20: DID ALL MANKIND FALL IN ADAM’S FIRST SIN?

Answer: All mankind, descending from Adam by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him in his first sin.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:21-22; Romans 5:12, 18-19.

Comment: God considered all mankind as being in Adam so that when Adam went bad we all went bad in him. The nature that we 12

have by virtue of belonging to Adam’s race is morally corrupt. We are under the wrath of God “by nature” (Ephesians 2:3) from the time we were conceived in the womb. This is why conversion and salvation must be much more than a “decision” for Christ. It must be a new creation, a rebirth, an exchange of hearts.

QUESTION 21: INTO WHAT CONDITION DID THE FALL BRING MANKIND?

Answer: The fall brought mankind into a condition of sin and misery.

Scripture: Psalm 51:5; Romans 5:18-19; 7:18; Isaiah 53:6; 64:6; John 3:6-7; Ephesians 2:1-3; 1 Corinthians 2:14.

QUESTION 22: WHAT IS THE SINFULNESS OF THAT CONDITION INTO WHICH ALL MANKIND HAS FALLEN?

Answer: The sinfulness of the condition into which all mankind fell is the guilt of Adam’s first sin, the lack of original righteousness, and the corruption of our whole nature (which is commonly called original sin), together with all actual transgressions which come from this nature.

Scripture: Romans 5:19; 3:10; Ephesians 2:1; Isaiah 53:6; Psalm 51:5; Matthew 15:19.

Comment: The Bible says that “in Adam all die” (1 Cor. 15:22) and that “one transgression yields condemnation for all men” (Rom. 5:18) and that “one man’s disobedience made many sinners” (Rom. 5:19). These statements lead us to conclude that God, in a way beyond our comprehension, established a unity between Adam and his posterity which makes it just for us to receive the imputation of his guilt and corruption. He was in some sense our representative head. We sinned in him and fell with him.

My 2 cents:   In Adam we ‘fell’….In Jesus we are made ‘well’.

QUESTION 4: WHAT IS THE WORD OF GOD?
Answer: The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, being given by divine inspiration, are the Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.
Scripture: 2 Peter 1:21; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; Isaiah 8:20; Matthew 5:17- 18; 1 Corinthians 2:13; Psalm 19:7-8.
Comment: “Scriptures” is a special word for the “writings” of the OT and NT. Perhaps you will want to explain that the OT deals with God’s word that came before Jesus was born; and the NT is the word of God that came after Jesus was born. “Infallible” means it will never lead us astray in what it teaches. It is true and does not err. It can be trusted. “Faith” refers to right thinking and feeling; and “practice” refers to right doing. We measure our thoughts and emotions and actions by the rule of the Bible. “Inspiration” means that it is God-breathed: by his Spirit he guided his spokesmen to speak his word in their language.
QUESTION 5: HOW DO WE KNOW THAT THE BIBLE IS THE
WORD OF GOD?
Answer: The Bible evidences itself to be God’s Word by the

heavenliness of its doctrine, the unity of its parts, and its power to convert sinners and to edify saints. But only the Spirit of God can make us willing to agree and submit to the Bible as the Word of God.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:6-7,13-16; Psalm 19:7-9; 119:18,129; Acts 10:43; 26:22; 18:28; Hebrews 4:12; Romans 15:4;
John 16:13,14; 1 John 2:20-27; 2 Corinthians 3:14-17; 4:4, 6.
Comment: “Heavenliness” refers to the fact [that] the teachings of Scripture are of such a nature that they cannot be explained by mere human resources. They bear the marks of the supernatural. “No man ever spoke like this man” (John 7:46). The “unity of its parts” has to do especially with the way all Scripture points to Christ. “To him all the prophets bear witness” (Acts 10:43). There are detailed and scholarly historical arguments for the reliability of the Bible, but these are generally beyond the acquaintance of ordinary Christians, and so do not serve as widespread support for Scripture. They are needed, however, in the scholarly arena.

Father I pray that ‘we’ will trust You as You have revealed Your good and perfect will for our lives as to all things.   I realize there are things we canunderstand and there are things we do not and cannot  understand.   We stand steadfast in You and we put our full faith in You and we trust You and Your word for our total and eternal salvation.   Amen.

QUESTION 3: HOW DO WE KNOW THERE IS A GOD?

Answer: The light of nature in man, and the works of God, plainly declares that there is a God; but his word and Spirit only, do effectually reveal him unto us for our salvation.

Scripture: Romans 1:18-20; Psalm 19:1-2; 2 Timothy 3:15; 1 Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:9, 10; Matthew 11:27.

Comment: The question distinguishes two kinds of knowledge: one is natural and comes from conscience (“the light of nature in

man”) and from the works of God in nature; the other is spiritual or saving, and comes from the recognition of the true value of God and the beauty of his character. Natural knowledge is possessed by all people and thus makes all people accountable to honor and thank God. Spiritual knowledge is possessed only by those whose natural blindness has been overcome by the Spirit of God. (1 Cor. 2:14-16). Our children must come to see the difference between these lest they think they are saved by much natural knowledge about God—which the devils also have James 2:19).

My comment:   The human distinction…the capacity/ability that humans possess…that is distinct/peculiar to humans…is the ‘spirit’ of a man that resides inside our being/body.   I like to see it/say it as “we have some of the Father’s D.N.A. inside us…we are not Spirit…He alone is Spirit…but He gave us some of what He is ‘so that’ we can ‘know’ Him.  Not just know about Him…no.  But to ‘know’ him at the deepest level of knowing…through objective awareness ‘in’ our spirit.   1 John 4:13 says “We know that we live in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.”

This is a slightly revised version of “The Baptist Catechism” first put forth by Baptists in 1689 in Great Britain. It was adopted by the Philadelphia Baptist Association in 1742. It is patterned on the well-known reformed Westminster Catechism

THE CATECHISM

Sometimes there are other ways to express a true answer to these questions. Feel free to use Scripture to formulate other true answers where possible and helpful. The aim of a catechism is not to be exhaustive but to give a solid tease from which to “keep growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:17).

QUESTION 1: WHO IS THE FIRST AND BEST OF BEINGS?

Answer: God is the first and best of beings.

Scripture: Isaiah 44:6; Psalm 8:1; 96:4; 97:9, 1 Samuel 2:2

QUESTION 2: WHAT IS THE CHIEF END OF MAN?

Answer: Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:31; Psalm 16:11; 37:4; 73:25-26; Isaiah 43:7.

Comment: “Glorify” does not mean make glorious. It means [to] reflect or display as glorious. Other words you could use for “end” are “goal” or “purpose”.

Father…help us each moment of each day to remember to ‘glorify’ You and ‘enjoy’ you.  We get soooo caught up in the busy-ness and problems of each day that we get we are children of the living and eternal God.  Help us experience you as our greatest joy.   Amen

Today’s Daily Light:

This week we are meditating and praying in the context of the ‘Lord’s Prayer (continuing)
Jesus, who is God-the-Son/the Son of God, told us to pray this way for specific intention/purpose/reason…
Let us look at the prayer in pieces…and we will keep it simple…meaning…it is rather clear as to the intention/purpose/reason for what/why we are to pray this way:

Matthew 6: 12-13  Jesus said “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.”

Forgive us ‘as we’ forgive.   I have heard many interpretive versions of what the literal interpretation is saying.   I think, for sure, this has a ‘conditional’ component to it.   No doubt God forgives us when we come to Him with a sincere heart of repentance…He does, absolutely.  But I think this speaks to His since of fairness…and justice.   His since of balance in all things. His understanding of our emotional/spiritual health…how He wired us to be whole..and thus He knows we must forgive others ‘so that’ we can receive the full measure and benefits of forgiveness as to giving and receiving of.  Do you get that?  He forgives us and thus we should/must have the same attitude and freely forgive others.   I believe that if we are truly repentant for our sins, that the measure of forgiveness that is given to us, will always bring a heartfelt attitude for those that we ‘also’ need to forgive.  So look for that leading to forgive others who have sinned against you or hurt you….forgive them ‘as you also’, are forgiven… ‘if’ you want to receive the deepest level of forgiveness that not only legally forgives but emotionally heals and restores relationships.     Some translations use the word ‘trespasses’ in place of the word ‘debts’.   And in using ‘trespasses’…I smile when I think of the story about the parent that heard their little girl praying the Lord’s prayer in ‘what’ she thought it said:   “Forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.”    And then Jesus, in this same teaching, in context, goes on to say in verse 14 “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

And wow…to me…a petition in the Lord’s prayer that I have learned that I must pray ‘often’ every day…. ‘lead us not into temptation ‘but’ deliver us from evil.      Evil, Satan, his dark side, is out there every day…seeking to kill, cripple, hurt, ruin, malign, condemn, just constantly screw with you, yours, theirs, ours, and generally just do everything he can in ‘leading’ us away from the path of righteousness.  That is his job…keep us falling and failing…trip us up…seek to get us so distracted, dazed, confused, in order to weave his web of suffering and agony around us.   You/we are not immune to this…some of his greatest tools are almost invisible to us….the subtle side of his work.   He leads us into being lulled into a malaise of sorts…a spiritual nap….we forget that we are ‘here’ to build the Kingdom and that people all around us are dying and hurting and lost.   We live in our little cocoons of contentment…and he provides all of the subtle temptations to keep us content in there….we live in the illusion of the American Christian mindset.  I know I sure fight that every day…

So let’s pray …Father…forgive us and help us to always listen to the voice that comes with every act of forgiveness that You provide to us…the voice that says…forgive others.   And Father…please protect us from the pull and tug of the dark side…deliver us from evil… ‘so that’ we can do your perfect and pleasing will.   Help us to pray this same prayer for our family, loved ones, those around us that you have placed in our lives…   In Jesus name we pray…Amen.

Today’s Daily Light:

Internet connections at home today…hmmm….hope that eventually this morning that this comes through…we shall see… blessings

Matthew 6:11, Jesus said to pray “Give us ‘today’ our daily bread.”

A little further on in this same chapter, Jesus explains:  Matthew 6:25-34  “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do no sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?       And why do you worry about clothes?  See how the lilies of the field grow.  They do not labor or spin.  Yet I tell you that not even Solomon n all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If this is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will He not much more clothe you.  O you of little faith?  So do not worry saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’  or ‘What shall we wear? ‘  For the pagans run after all these things and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his reghteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about iteself.  Each days has trouble of its own.

Jesus tells us to, each day, pray to our Father, God, demonstrating our faith and dependence on Him, to supply all our needs.   Jesus says that God cares about us more than anything else in creation and that He, God, is quite capable, because He cares, of supplying our needs.   And Jesus explains that we would be far better off in the true reality of what ‘life’ is really about…life eternal…by his illustration He explains to us that our life on this earth is soooo very short and that if we can get our minds around that reality and see that true life, the real life, the eternal life, the best life, is living life ‘today’ pursuing God’s plan, God’s program, God’s heart, in our life now which is building into the realm of life in the eternal life after death that we will live in heaven.  And thus Jesus says instead of worrying about our problems and stuff we need for ‘today’ in this teenie weenie little part of our whole eternal life….focus on buidling the Kingdom and walking with God in a faith based relationship through the righteousness provided us through and in our relationship with God the Son, Jesus.

Jesus…  it is like you said all of that to me personally….I get so lost in the miutia and problems of each day….and I admit I get a bit obsessed in making sure I have all the stuff I think I need, which is way over the top, and then I want the same for my family…..geeze….such a hamster wheel.   All I can do is take you at your word and pray the way you ask us to pray…. knowing the our Father in heaven is more than capable of giving me just what I need… ‘so that’ I can focus on what is important to Him…His Kingdom…and His righteousness.

In Matthew 6:10, Jesus says we should pray “Your Kingdom come…Your Will be done”…on earth as it is in heaven.”

God’s Kingdom ‘was’, ‘is’ and ‘always’ will be.  There is no question of ‘who’ is in charge of…’who’ has the power…or ‘who’ can get the job done as to doing anything He so chooses.  Nope.  He has power and ability beyond what we can even fathom.  All one needs to do is look out and up into nature, the heavens, and you see this unexplainable precise, prescribed order, that was put in place and is held together by a spoken word from His power.  Amazing and beyond understanding is this power that our God is and has.

Okay..back to the point of the prayer.   Scripture says that God’s Kingdom is full function, completely established, in heaven (the ‘as it is’)…and Jesus says that we are to pray for God’s Kingdom to ‘come’ to completion, become fully formed and functional, ‘on earth’ as it is in heaven.

If you look at the main plot of the story of life….it begins with God creating a stage where His plan for installing His rule and reign (His program of an eternity of perfection, and peace and joy), and the story ends with God’s Son, Jesus, ruling as eternal King over God’s chosen and redeemed people, for eternity, in a perfect order of peace and joy.   Sounds like a fairy tale…but as my grandpa would say… “but it ain’t no fairy tale”.

God’s will is not God’s wish.   God’s Will, His way and program, His plan for when, how, where, all things should and will occur…WILL be done.  Period.  So…since God’s main story line and main plot is to bring to completion His Kingdom (His rule and reign) in and on the earth, as it already is in heaven…’if’ that is where we are headed…’if’ God’s main plan is to build a Kingdom where He rules and reigns and that plan includes ‘us’….then shouldn’t that be our primary focus in the short period of time we have to live and breathe on this planet?   And the only correct answer is yes.

Our part in building the Kingdom is to go out and recruit other people who have the opportunity to become ‘eternal Kingdom dwellers and builders.  And this is good news.   What better news can we share with someone than to tell them that God, Creator of the universe, that His Will is to have a Kingdom full of people who live with Him for eternity….we are talking life and death and eternity here folks.   And…that the price of entrance into this Kingdom has been paid in full through the shed blood of God’s Son, Jesus Christ.   More ‘Good News’…and such is the story of the Kingdom…such is the ‘gospel’ of truth.

So….  ‘today’…put on a Kingdom building mindset…get aligned and flow with God’s will and program…go out and make Kingdom disciples….share the good news of our King and of His Kingdom…and sign folks up.  And, then as Jesus asks that we do…pray in line with…according to…the precise WILL of God…pray….that God’s Kingdom will come…and that His will be done….and the reason we pray this way is because it ‘aligns’ our will to God’s will…and when we learn to pray ‘with’ God’s will….big things happen.   (I think it just reflects God’s ‘father’ nature….certainly He doesn’t need our participation in order for Him to accomplish anything…butttt….He fashioned the God/Father and Us/child relationship ‘so that’ He could share His joy, His plans, His eternal good stuff with us…simply wants us to be a part of who and what He is.   And ‘that’ is why we are here.  All about Him.

Blessings…

(Monday-Friday, from my morning quiet time, I will write a short thought for that day which I pray God will use to motivate you to ‘GO’ for that day.  Your objective is simple…to GO…to GO OUT and share the love of Christ with someone in that day….to GO and bear fruit …to be light to the world.)

Today’s Daily Light:

Let’s spend some time this week meditating and praying in the context of the ‘Lord’s Prayer

Jesus, who is God-the-Son/the Son of God, told us to pray this way for specific intention/purpose/reason…

Let us look at the prayer in pieces…and we will keep it simple…meaning…it is rather clear as to the intention/purpose/reason for what/why we are to pray this way:

Matthew 6:9   Jesus said “This, then, is how you should pray:  “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” …

Hallowed = honor as Holy….to make Holy..to consecrate.

Our prayer today and everyday should be… Father…we honor you as the only God…the Holy God of Creation.   You are Lord and King and ruler of the universe and all of life…of all things…and you are in heaven.   By saying this I am declaring with my lips that you are my God and that I see and know that you are Holy and I say it to proclaim it before all who listen and hear…I declare that you are Holy to pay tribute and to honor the ‘all’ of how wonderful, glorious, and Holy YOU are!

There is power and healing for our hearts, minds, and souls as we fix our minds and hearts and souls on seeing our Holy God in this way…by affirming in our hearts, minds, and souls who He is in all of life, who He is ‘for’ us and ‘to’ us.  He is our Holy God.   We must hold to this reality of our Holy God…keep it always in the front of our minds.  The reality of who He is will drive our actions and ambitions.  He is in heaven and He rules and reigns out of His Holiness.  He is ours and we are His.  We declare that there are no other Gods…there is none like our Holy and beautiful and wonderful God!!
