I had to leave home earlier this morning to tend to work things…so didn’t get to finish my writing and push the send button….so here is the last piece of that. In further thinking today…I have spent the past 43 years working in the health services industry. One of our service entities is a wonderful nursing home facility. We now also provide hospice services in our community. Through these many years, I have been privileged and honored to stand at the bedside of ‘many’ people as they are in the end-game of their life. I have held the hand of ‘many’ people as they are breathing their last breath. What I can tell you that I have gained from this experience is that when someone is dying…they are not preoccupied with the cares of this temporary life. They are not thinking about their next family vacation, or when the house will need re-roofed or how their investments are doing. They are not preoccupied with figuring out what new high tech t.v. to buy next, or what vehicle they will purchase next. They are no longer anxious or worried or stressed about the ups and downs and disappointments that is common to all of us as we work to achieve and accomplish and acquire. No…they are only thinking about one thing: What is next..and am I prepared for ‘next’. As relates to the people that I have confidence that they had placed their ‘life’ in Jesus Christ for their eternal salvation…it is a glorious occasion to be with them when they breathe their last. I always expect to hear or see something from the ‘other’ side…to maybe catch a glimpse of Jesus our great redeemer as He comes to gather them to their eternal home. But always, at a minimum, I know that I am surrounded by angels who have come to lead God’s beloved child into eternal life. My point is…the value of eternal life…what can be better or more important than that? This temporary life that we now live, joy and blessings mixed with times of pain and suffering…can only be at best a half-full life as compared to the eternal abundant life that Jesus speaks of in John 10:10. Soo….this is why I spend so much time writing about the value of eternal life as opposed to being lost in eternal darkness. Jesus is the way into eternal life…He is the light. There is no other way. And since this is so…what can be of more value to us than is to go out and share the truth of this glorious news with everyone we know….?
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and to an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy. As the outcome of your faith you obtain the salvation of your souls. (1 Peter 1:3–10)
None of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. (Romans 14:7–9)
