Continuing with… The Search For Significance, by R. McGee
The Trip ‘In’ (moving from old self to new self…which is becoming all we can be ‘in’ Christ…which is, implementing the purpose of our creation…which is where we come to say.. “This is what I was made for…living and walking by faith ‘in’ Christ…living life with eternity in our focus and mind.”)
This last part of our study from The Search For Significance deals with the ‘process’ of laying aside the old self and putting on the new self ‘so that’ our thoughts, emotions, and actions increasingly reflect the character of Christ.
This ‘experience’ is based on 2 Corinthians 10:3-5:
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
Believe it or not, desire it or not, understand it or not, we are at war. Most of us don’t like to think about spiritual warfare, hoping like the proverbial ostrich with his head in the sand that it will pass us by. The battlefield is the mind. Paul instructed: “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).
Satan’s goal is to keep our minds unrenewed ‘so that‘ we won’t be transformed. He does this by establishing fortresses of deception that produce thoughts that are against the knowledge or understanding of God. Fortresses of deception are belief systems that are reinforced over the years by the thoughts, emotions, and actions they produce ‘in’ us. It is a self feeding system. (Thus why I refer to it as the sin nature’s default-go-to-program). For instance, if a person believes that he is a failure, when he succeeds, his belief system (his fortress…the default program) will produce such thoughts asWhat luck! It’s about time. Look at all the failure you had to go through just to get one success. How unusual for a loser like you to do something right. If the person fails, his belief system will produce such thoughts as I told you I’d fail. What a loser you are. You can’t help it; you just can do any better. Whether he succeeds or fails, the result is the same. His belief that he is a failure is reinforced.
We have been explaining and teaching you that to renew your mind you must begin to establish a stronghold of truth in your mind through memorization and meditation on the truth of God…the knowledge of God…’which is’ revealed to us in His Word. This mind renewal is essential to being transformed into the image of Christ. (Friends…the imperative importance of ‘renewing your mind and being transformed’ is not a Jedi Knight mind trick..it is not the power of positive thinking….it is God’s plan…through regeneration…where He/God installs His spirit into our human spirit at the time of our accepting Christ as Savior…and where we…working within the limitations of human will…work in harmony with the indwelling Spirit in a lifelong process of being renewed and transformed…the maturation process of the believer… such is our part…to open the spirit mind…submit to…work in harmony with…discipline ourselves to spend time with God through His Word…through fellowship with Jesus in prayer and meditation…..such is God’s provision for our renewal process…so we can ‘see’ further and deeper into the ways and things of the eternal Kingdom of God…..’so that’ we will bear more eternal fruit.
( I suggest you create your own ‘Truth Card’ and carry it with you and read it constantly).
Satan’s Lie Your Worth = Your Performance + Others’ Opinions
God’s Truth Your Worth = What God Says about You
Satan’s Lie Those who fail are unworthy of love and deserve to be blamed and condemned (fear of punishment; propensity to punish others).
God’s Truth Propitiation (1 John 4:9-10): I am deeply loved by God.
Satan’s Lie I must meet certain standards to feel good about myself. If i don’t….(fear of failure).
God’s Truth Justification (Romans 3:19-25 and 2 Corinthians 5:21): I am completely forgiven and fully pleasing to God.
Satan’s Lie I must be approved (accepted) by certain others to feel good about myself. If I’m not approved…(fear of rejection).
God’s Truth Reconciliation (Colossians 1:21-22): I am totally accepted by God.
Satan’s Lie I am what I am. I cannot change. I am hopeless (shame).
God’s Truth Regeneration (2 Corinthians 5:17): I am absolutely complete in Christ
Friends…..Your goal is to live a life that is seeing the light of God’s truth being manifest in your daily life. Thank the Lord continuously for making you into a person who has ‘God’s Truth’ qualities alive in you. By doing this constantly…you will develop a habit of remembering that you are deeply loved, completely forgiven, fully pleasing, totally accepted, and complete in Christ. (say those ‘truths’ to yourself again right now and then thank God for the ‘truth’). Also…memorize the ‘false beliefs’ .. ‘so that’ you will be more able to quickly recognize them in your thoughts. Then as you recognize them, you can more readily replace them with the ‘truths of God’s Word’.
Father…I thank you soooo much for Your total plan…You call us to You…You place us ‘in’ Jesus…you install your Spirit to live inside us and to renew us and make us fruitful…all for Your wonderful glory which we will share with You forever. How we thank you…Amen
