Understanding ‘Evil’
Romans 7:18 NIV Paul wrote “I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature…..(and continuing in context in vs. 21 he writes) …So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
John 5:19 NIV John wrote …”we know that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.”
I can think of no more challenging question for most of us than is the question of ‘why does evil exist? And when we think of all of the manifestations of evil, i.e.; war, murder, illness, disease, I know of so many non-believers who pose the argument that ‘if’ there is a God and He allows evil..then such is the reason that they say that they choose to not believe or put-their-trust and faith in such a God. And even among believers…we struggle with these same questions.
Evil in its base purpose…seeks to supplant, distort, and destroy the truth that God is love and only in ‘Him’ do we find ultimate peace and joy. Evil seeks to muck and mire the reality of a sovereign God who loves us unconditionally. Evil..at its core nature…seeks to undermine all things perfect and good that God created. Evil is a bad hombre. Even our sin-nature is a product of …and originates out-of evil.
The good news is that Evil is temporary. It will come to an end. And greater news is that our God, our Lord Jesus, triumphed over evil through His death and resurrection! Kaboom!!
I think that it will really be of help to all of us to spend the next week or so reading an essay (I call it a master thesis 😊) developed and written by John Piper. I will present it to you starting next week in parts..in a series over a number of days. If you work at using my pastor/David’s S.O.A.P. method in reading and absorbing the information in the series…I promise that you will come to a greatly enlightened understanding of the realm and nature of evil. ‘Then’…you will not only have more appreciation for the love and grace and sovereignty of our great Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…but you will also be more equipped to help others find reasonable answers and lead them into thought processes that help them work through the questions and objections surrounding the reality of evil with the end result being that they come to see the beauty and glory of our great God. And ‘that’ is win-win.
I pray for all those that are hurting and dealing with emotional and physical pain from suffering that they are enduring at this time. None of us are immune from such. I pray that the peace and grace of our Lord will be with all of you and that you will pray to Him that is able to comfort you…the one who can heal…can mend…can repair…who holds and freely gives us eternal life. He alone is our source and supply..now and for eternity.
