Daily Light – Jan 4, 2018

Your daily goal:
Philippians 3:14  “press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
(Monday-Friday, from my morning quiet time, I will write a short thought for that day which I pray God will use to motivate you to ‘GO’ for that day.  Your objective is simple…to GO…to GO OUT and share the love of Christ with someone in that day….to GO and bear fruit …to be light to the world.)

Today’s Daily Light

Ezekiel 16:49-51  Self-centered Sodom    (Today’s DL is from my friend and pastor, David.   In his morning devotional time, David uses the S.O.A.P. concept in his ‘time’ with the Lord.  S.O.A.P. stands for Study, Observe, Apply, Pray.   David teaches this concept in his work developing pastors and leaders in all parts of the world.)

16:49  Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen. 51 Samaria did not commit half the sins you did. You have done more detestable things than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous by all these things you have done.   NIV

Yahweh compares Jerusalem with her two “sister cities” of Sodom and Samaria, both of which have been destroyed because of their wickedness, and declares that Jerusalem is more wicked than either of them. If they deserved judgment, how much more does Jerusalem deserve it?!

Gen 19 makes it clear that the sin of Sodom was their sexual perversions, but here Ezekiel gives more of the picture. He says they were “arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me.”  I think the connection is that the more they became self-centered, the more they indulged their desires. It started with feeling entitled to pleasure and ignored any sense of responsibility to be aware of the feelings and needs of others. Their sexual sin was the result of their inner arrogance.

Holy Lord, our culture is hypersexualized. We believe we should be able to indulge our every desire and imagination, and anyone who challenges such behavior is called a “hater”. We have rejected You as the One who has the right to determine morality, and that must bring you grief and make You legitimately angry. But this passage helps me understand that drifting into self-indulgence in any form is a dangerous slippery slope that will “take us farther than we planned to go, cost us more than we planned to pay, and keep us longer than we planned to stay.”  Help me always remember that You are my Creator and give you full allegiance so that I do not start down that slope you describe in Rom 1:18-31.
