Today’s Daily Light:
Friends: Today…I want to share with you the daily mediation from my life long friend and pastor, David. This sooo spoke to my heart. I pray that it will minister to you as well as you are seeking to be ‘light’ to the world.
Numbers 13 Fear or Faith?
Num. 13:1 The LORD now said to Moses, 2 “Send out men to explore the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to the Israelites. …23When they came to the valley of Eshcol, they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes so large that it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them. … 25 After exploring the land for forty days, the men … reported to the whole community …“ it is indeed a bountiful country—a land flowing with milk and honey. 28 But the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified. We even saw giants there, …
30 But Caleb tried to quiet the people as they stood before Moses. “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!” 31 But the other men who had explored the land with him disagreed. “We can’t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!” 32 So they spread this bad report about the land among the Israelites: “The land … will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge. 33 We even saw giants there, …. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”
Num. 14:1 Then the whole community began weeping aloud, and they cried all night. 2 Their voices rose in a great chorus of protest against Moses and Aaron. “If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!” they complained. 3 “Why is the LORD taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and our little ones will be carried off as plunder! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?” 4 Then they plotted among themselves, “Let’s choose a new leader and go back to Egypt!” NLT
Fear spreads faster than faith, and it distorts a) our perception of reality, and b) our ability to cope with reality. Yes, there were giants in the land. But God knew that before the spies did. There was also giant fruit and produce. If God did all the miracles to get them out of Egypt, is it likely that He could get them into the land of Canaan? That is not hard for us to understand, but if we were in their shoes we might have been as fearful as they were. (I can remember times when there was no one else upset or fearful, but I still complained and feared.) There were ten men saying it was too hard, and only two saying they could do it because God was with them. Faith must decide whether to focus on the giants or on God. All 12 spies had experienced God’s mighty deeds in the past, even the very recent past, but only two remembered, reflected and learned from them.
Lord, sometimes we think it would be wonderful to see the mighty deeds that You did in the Bible, but we don’t have to see them to learn from them and get the benefit from them. Even if you did none of them except create the universe and raise Jesus from the dead, we have all the evidence we need of your power – and your love! But help me choose to remember what You have done in the past and choose to trust You in every difficult situation – and never give in to fear or complaining. When others speak words of fear, especially in groups, help me show them how to acknowledge their fears and cast their cares on You. I thank and praise You that You are trustworthy! Amen!
