Let There Be Light
In the bible, from Genesis to Revelation, we see the contrast between darkness and light. In the prior posts we have sought to define the darkness. We will now move to define the ‘light’. Jesus, the Son of God – God the Son, is the light. Please read the scripture references below to form a basis and premise for the posts that will follow over the next series “The Entrance of Light.” Numbers 6:25 NIV “The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;”
Darkness is the absence of light. Light penetrates darkness and provides illumination. We are dependent on light to ‘see’. We have lights in our home, on our car, and on our electronic devices. We use flashlights, candles, and lanterns in order to illuminate our need to ‘see’. Light is ‘the’ essential element that gives us the ability to ‘see.’
Definition of ‘Light’, Merriam-Webster: Something that makes vision possible.
Genesis 1:3 NIV “And God said, Let there be light, and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.”
John 1:1-5 NIV “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.”
1 John 1:5-7 NIV “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from every sin.”
Mathew 4:16 NIV . . . “the people living in darkness have seen a great light “ (quoted from Isaiah 9:2, Isaiah’s prophecy concerning the coming of Christ).
John 8:12 NIV Jesus said “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 14:6 NIV Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Matthew 5:14 NIV Jesus said “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
Ephesians 5:8-9 NIV “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as Children of the light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth).”
1 Peter 2:9 NIV “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.”
